Muslim magic

A somewhat long but wholly fascinating entry on lawful Muslim magic and Muslim exorcists:

Some of Hughes’ entries are pregnant with potential and make me want to write an all-Islam roleplaying game—during the reign of Harun al-Rashid, say, and using Baghdad as the Big City—or maybe a novel. For example:

“Da`wah. Lit, “A call, incantation (i.e. of God’s help).” A term used to express a system of incantation which is held to be lawful by orthodox Muhammadans; whilst sihr, “magic,” and kahānah, “fortune-telling,” are said to be unlawful, the Prophet having forbidden both.
